Engineering teams often struggle with fragmented project knowledge, where essential context is hidden in sprawling codebases, scattered documents, or the minds of individual team members.

Copilot Spaces by GitHub addresses this challenge by providing a single hub for code, documentation, specifications, and custom instructions. This allows Copilot to offer AI-powered assistance that is smarter, more relevant, and tailored to your team’s specific needs.

Spaces are currently available in github.com for all Copilot users. If you are a business or enterprise customer, then your organization admin must opt in to Copilot preview features.

Turning Copilot into a Project Expert

With Copilot Spaces, you can curate collections of essential project materials, from source code to technical documents and notes. Granting Copilot access to this focused context lets it deliver deeper insights, explain intricate systems, and suggest best practices uniquely suited to your project.

You can further enhance Copilot’s guidance by adding custom instructions, ensuring its recommendations align with your team’s objectives and standards.

Scaling Knowledge Across Your Organization

Sharing expertise is effortless with Copilot Spaces. Teams can create and manage spaces within their GitHub organization and easily share access.

This accelerates onboarding for new developers, reduces knowledge silos, and ensures that specialized know-how is accessible to every team member. By democratizing information, Copilot Spaces helps bridge gaps and fosters a culture of continual learning and collaboration.

Keeping Information Fresh and Reliable

Integrating repositories with Copilot Spaces is straightforward, simply attach your GitHub repos to your space. As files and repositories are updated, those changes are automatically reflected, so Copilot always works from the most current information. This seamless synchronization eliminates manual copying and ensures your team relies on a single, always up-to-date source of truth.

Getting Started with Copilot Spaces

Copilot Spaces is currently in early preview for all GitHub Copilot users. To experiment with your own space, visit github.com/copilot/spaces. Checkout the documentation to get started.

Users are encouraged to provide feedback via discussion forums or the inline feedback button, helping shape the future of the platform.

For organizations, admins must enable Copilot preview features to grant access to Spaces. Starting June 18, 2025, billing will follow the Copilot Chat model: Pro, Pro+, Business, and Enterprise subscribers share a premium request quota, while Free users are limited to 50 monthly space chats. Rate limits may apply during times of high demand.

A Smarter Workspace for Modern Teams

Copilot Spaces marks a significant advancement in collaborative software development. By centralizing both code and critical context, it enables teams to scale expertise, accelerate problem-solving, and ensure everyone benefits from up-to-date, project-specific knowledge. As AI becomes increasingly woven into daily workflows, tools like Copilot Spaces will be vital for boosting productivity and nurturing a culture of shared innovation.
