The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) is taking bold action to strengthen the nation’s position in artificial intelligence by funding the National AI Research Resource Operations Center (NAIRR-OC). This new initiative builds on a successful pilot and is set to create a robust, accessible infrastructure for AI research and education across the country.

Bridging the AI Resource Divide

As AI evolves rapidly, many researchers and educators still struggle to access the computational resources, datasets, and models needed to advance their work. The NAIRR pilot, launched in early 2024, tackled this challenge by connecting over 400 research teams with essential AI tools. Through collaboration with 14 federal agencies and 28 private and nonprofit partners, the pilot established a model for expanding resource access at scale.

Building a Sustainable AI Future

The establishment of NAIRR-OC is a forward-thinking investment aligned with the White House’s AI Action Plan. The center will craft a comprehensive framework, oversee operations, and integrate advanced computing resources nationwide. A centralized web portal will make it simpler for researchers to connect with available tools, while targeted outreach will help grow and diversify the AI community.

Driving Innovation Across Sectors

The impact of NSF’s work is already evident. By democratizing access to leading-edge AI resources, the program has enabled advancements in agriculture, drug discovery, cybersecurity, and STEM education. This approach not only accelerates scientific breakthroughs but also cultivates a new generation of AI professionals equipped to tackle national challenges.

Collaboration at the Heart of Progress

NAIRR-OC’s mission is built on collaboration. By uniting government agencies, industry leaders, and nonprofits, the initiative amplifies the reach and effectiveness of shared AI resources. Katie Antypas, director of NSF's Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure, highlights that these partnerships are key to unlocking the full scientific and educational potential of widespread AI access.

Engaging the Research Community

NSF is inviting proposals from institutions eager to help develop and manage the NAIRR-OC. The center’s design will prioritize sustainability, growth, and community-driven leadership, positioning it as the operational backbone for a national AI research ecosystem. This ensures that AI innovation remains accessible, impactful, and inclusive for researchers, educators, and students across the U.S.

Investing in the Nation’s AI Future

The creation of the NAIRR Operations Center marks a significant step in strengthening America’s scientific infrastructure. By supporting open, collaborative access to advanced AI tools, the NSF is empowering U.S. researchers to lead on the global AI stage, driving innovation and educational opportunity for years to come.
