Kiro Opens Access: The AWS AI Development Partner for Everyone, No Waitlist Required

Welcome to the New Era of AI-Driven Development

Developers no longer need to wait to experience Kiro’s revolutionary approach to AI-powered coding. The platform has officially ended its waitlist after an explosive period of growth, opening its doors to all. This immediate access is paired with a limited-time offer of 500 free bonus credits, giving newcomers a substantial head start as they explore Kiro’s tools and features.

Flexible and Transparent Pricing

Kiro has introduced a credit-based pricing model to provide both flexibility and predictability. Users draw from a single pool of credits, which can be used for both vibe and spec-driven coding tasks.

Credits are measured in precise 0.01 increments, allowing for granular control and optimal value. Standard tasks utilize credits at a 1X rate, while advanced models, such as Claude Sonnet-class, have a 1.3X multiplier per prompt.

While AWS IAM Identity Center login is not yet available, the team encourages interested AWS users to reach out for early access updates

Community Momentum and Tangible Impact

Since the public launch, Kiro has seen rapid adoption, with more than 100,000 developers joining in the first five days alone. User feedback reflects the platform’s ability to:

  • Save time by automating unit tests, documentation, and performance optimization.

  • Drive spec-driven development with structured approaches that reduce project timelines.

  • Leverage autonomous agents for handling routine and background tasks, allowing developers to focus on higher-level challenges.

  • Foster continuous learning and knowledge sharing among developers.

  • Enhance security and scalability key for startups and growing teams.

  • Empower developers with multimodal input and lifecycle control, offering a collaborative experience reminiscent of working with a senior engineer.

These testimonials point to Kiro’s capacity to transform both daily workflows and strategic development outcomes for its users.

Highlights of Kiro 0.4.0

The latest version, 0.4.0, introduces several updates aimed at further streamlining development:

  • Optional Spec MVP Tasks: Allowing teams to focus on core features while keeping comprehensive task lists intact.

  • Per-Prompt Credit Insights: Providing real-time feedback on credit usage within the chat panel.

  • Dev Server Integration: Enhanced error detection through intelligent reading of dev server outputs.

  • Reference Specs as Context: Enabling more informed prompts and responses by leveraging existing specifications.

  • Trusted Commands and Bug Fixes: Improved stability and expanded support for trusted workflows, with a full changelog available for deeper insights.

These enhancements are tailored to help developers prioritize tasks, manage resources, and troubleshoot all within an intuitive, AI-powered IDE.

Kiro: New Development Features

Kiro is an agentic IDE designed to enhance the development workflow. It integrates AI capabilities directly into the coding environment to assist with tasks ranging from initial specification to final commit. Here are the key features available now:

Spec-Driven Development: You can create structured "specs" to define complex features. The AI agent uses these specs to generate tasks, and you can choose an MVP workflow to mark non-core tasks like tests and documentation as optional, allowing you to focus on core functionality first.

Agentic Chat & Context: The integrated chat allows you to build features using natural language. You can reference your spec files directly in the chat (using #spec) to provide the agent with context for more accurate responses.

Dev Server and Background Tasks: Kiro automatically detects and runs long-running commands (like npm run dev or build watchers) in the background, freeing up your terminal while it continues to track the process.

AI-Powered Git Commits: You can generate AI-powered commit messages directly from the source control panel with a single click.

Intelligent Diagnostics: The agent is equipped with a diagnostics tool to identify syntax, type, and semantic errors, helping to improve code accuracy and reduce linting issues.

Usage Tracking and Notifications: You can see credit consumption for each prompt directly in the chat panel. The system also provides proactive notifications about your credit usage to help you manage your plan.

MCP (Model Context Protocol): Manage your MCP tools with new interactive controls—enable/disable individual tools, and see success indicators at a glance.

Agent Models: Kiro provides access to different AI models, including an "Auto" agent that mixes various frontier and specialized models to optimize for intent detection and performance.

Security & Safety: The IDE includes built-in repository protection to prevent the agent from writing to .git directories. It also features enhanced security patterns to detect potentially dangerous shell commands, requiring manual approval for untrusted operations.

Import VS Code Config: Easy setup and fast integration thanks to the importer from VS Code where you can migrate extensions, settings and keybindings. Get instantly started with Kiro using familiar VS Code configurations.

Only extensions available on Open VSX can be imported. Extensions are loaded in the background, so you can continue with onboarding while they install.
