Microsoft is updating how users interact with Windows by introducing powerful new features to Copilot, designed to streamline search and boost efficiency. With this latest update, users gain intuitive tools that transform the way they find, manage, and collaborate on their content.

Semantic File Search: Intuitive Retrieval with Everyday Language

Semantic file search revolutionizes the file-finding process. Instead of relying on exact file names or keywords, users can now describe what they're looking for in natural language.

Whether it's "images of bridges at sunset" or "the chicken tostada recipe," Copilot interprets the request and delivers accurate results.

This advanced search capability supports a range of file formats such as .png, .jpeg, .pdf, and .docx and works across multiple languages, including English, Chinese (Simplified), French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.

  • Search files and images using descriptive phrases rather than technical terms.
  • Fine-tune Copilot’s retrieval permissions directly in the app settings for added control.
  • Works seamlessly with a variety of popular document and image formats.

Redesigned Copilot Home: Centralized Access to Recent Work

The new Copilot home interface puts recent activity front and center. The left pane now displays recently used files, apps, and conversations, allowing users to swiftly resume their tasks.

Need a summary or insight? Launch a guided Vision session by clicking any recent app, or drag and drop a document or image into Copilot’s chat window for instant analysis and discussion.

  • Jump back into recent projects with a single click.
  • Leverage Vision for contextual assistance based on your screen or uploaded content.
  • Start chats, get summaries, or extract insights directly from your files within Copilot.

Privacy and User Control: Transparent Data Handling

Microsoft prioritizes user privacy with Copilot’s design. Only files that have been recently accessed on your device appear in Copilot, referencing the standard Windows “Recent” folder. No files are scanned or uploaded unless you explicitly choose to share them, placing you in complete control of your data at all times.

  • Only compatible, recently opened files populate Copilot’s quick-access list.
  • Files remain private and are never uploaded or shared without your explicit action.
  • User-friendly permission settings ensure you decide what Copilot can access.

Availability and Community Feedback

The update (version 1.25082.132.0 and above) is rolling out through the Microsoft Store to all Windows Insider channels. While not every user will receive it immediately, Microsoft encourages Insiders to provide feedback within the Copilot app, helping refine these features ahead of a broader release.

Takeaway: Copilot Becomes an Even Smarter Digital Assistant

With its new semantic search and streamlined home experience, Copilot stands out as a smarter, more personal assistant for Windows users. These enhancements demonstrate Microsoft’s commitment to intuitive, productive, and privacy-focused computing.
