Engineering teams often struggle when critical knowledge is fragmented across codebases, documents, and individual minds.

Copilot Spaces addresses this challenge by bringing all relevant project context together, making GitHub Copilot more intelligent and its suggestions more precise.

With Copilot Spaces, your code, documentation, specifications, and custom instructions live in a single, shareable workspace. This centralized approach accelerates onboarding and boosts team productivity.

Elevating Copilot to a Project Expert

Copilot Spaces enables teams to select the exact code, documents, notes, and instructions that Copilot should reference

By curating this context, you transform Copilot into a true subject matter expert on your project. It can understand system architecture, specific design decisions, and best practices unique to your workflow.

Custom instructions per workspace further refine its expertise, ensuring more tailored and effective code suggestions.

  • Curated context: Choose precise files and documents for Copilot’s reference.
  • Custom instructions: Direct Copilot’s behavior for each project space.
  • Faster onboarding: New team members quickly access essential insights.

Scaling Expertise Organization-Wide

One standout benefit of Copilot Spaces is the ability to rapidly scale knowledge across your organization. Sharing a space within your GitHub organization grants every developer access to the same curated context.

This approach removes bottlenecks, bridges skill gaps, and enables team members to leverage best practices and specialized insights without relying solely on a handful of experts.

  • Shareable workspaces: Distribute critical knowledge seamlessly.
  • Consistent expertise: Keep everyone aligned on standards and practices.
  • Accelerated collaboration: Developers spend less time searching, more time building.

Effortless Maintenance with Live Integration

Copilot Spaces is directly integrated with your GitHub repositories, allowing code and documentation to be added with just a few clicks.

As files and repositories evolve, the space automatically syncs, ensuring Copilot always works with the latest information. This reduces the maintenance burden and guarantees your team receives up-to-date, relevant suggestions.

  • Direct repository integration: Attach code and docs seamlessly from GitHub.
  • Automatic updates: Spaces always reflect the latest project changes.
  • Reduced maintenance: Eliminate outdated guidance and missed updates.

How to Get Started

Copilot Spaces is available now in early preview for all Copilot users on GitHub.com. To explore the feature, visit github.com/copilot/spaces and begin curating your project context. Business and enterprise users may require admin approval to access preview features. The GitHub discussion forums and in-product feedback tools are open for sharing your experience and suggestions.

Beginning June 4th, 2025, Copilot Spaces will follow the same billing structure as Copilot Chat. Premium users consume one premium request per chat in premium spaces, while free users’ chats count toward a monthly limit. Be mindful of potential rate limits during periods of high demand to plan your team’s usage effectively.

Empower Teams with Centralized Knowledge

Copilot Spaces marks a significant advancement in collaborative software development. Centralizing project context within a single, always-current workspace allows teams to work smarter, onboard new members efficiently, and scale expertise across the organization.
