In a series of quick releases Github CoPilot is getting some changes that will affect how you develop using the "Agent" feature of CoPilot. In a move to make cutting edge models accessible while still maintaining income, Github has moved to essentially charging $0.027 to $0.04 per request or $10 for 300 requests ($0.033) on the standard plan and $40 for 1500 requests ($0.027ea) in the new Pro+ plan. This applies only to models besides the base model of GPT-40 for edit, chat and agent modes.

  • GitHub Copilot Pro+ Introduced: A new, higher tier offering developers access to the latest AI models like GPT-4.5, priority access to previews, and 1500 premium requests monthly. This is on top of the unlimited base model usage for features like agent mode, chat, and completions included in all paid plans.

  • New Models Generally Available: Several new AI models are now available for use within GitHub Copilot, including Anthropic Claude 3.7 Sonnet, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, OpenAI o3-mini, and Google Gemini Flash 2.0.

  • Open Source MCP Server: The official GitHub MCP (Model Context Protocol) Server has been released as open source, allowing for things like customized tool descriptions and support for code scanning integration. MCP tools give LLMs a standardized way to call functions, look up data, and interact with the world.  Includes a new  get_me function that improves the natural language user experience when asking the LLM things like: “Show me my private repos.”

Impact for Developers

These updates offer several potential benefits and considerations for developers:

  • Access to Cutting-Edge AI: Copilot Pro+ provides access to the latest models (like Claude 3.7) and priority previews, enabling developers to leverage the most advanced AI capabilities for more complex coding tasks, potentially boosting productivity and code quality significantly.

  • More Choice and Flexibility: The availability of multiple models (Claude, OpenAI, Google) allows developers to choose the AI that best suits their coding style, preferred language, or specific task. Different models might excel in different areas.

  • Enhanced Customization (Potentially): The open-source MCP Server could allow developers or organizations to tailor their Copilot experience more deeply, integrate custom tools, or potentially enhance integrations with internal systems like code scanning, though this likely requires more setup effort.

  • Tiered Cost/Benefit: Developers now have another tier (Pro+) to consider. Those needing the absolute latest models or who are heavy users might find the added cost worthwhile, while others may be well-served by the existing tiers and the newly available model choices within them.
